The next morning, I immediately called a meeting with all three girls and Ayanka, intent on discussing my plan with them. I thought for a moment about briefing Lark and the others about the dinosaur reveal but had a hunch the other fae would know just as much about dinos as the cat girls.

There was a breakfast spread laid out on one of the table pavilions, and I quickly grabbed some fruit and a few slabs of thick-cut bacon while I waited for everyone else to arrive. Kirra and Rin arrived first, followed by Ayanka and her guard. Emi was last. Apparently, she needed a little extra sleep after our romp last night. Several other fae from the village were in the pavilion as well, cooking, eating, or doing their daily chores, and most of them halted to listen with interest as I launched into my spiel.

“Your demons are called dinosaurs in my realm,” I explained, and all but Rin winced as if I’d struck them, even Ayanka’s unflappable guard. “Listen, I know you don’t want to speak about them, but that’s what has to happen here. Your males are gone. The ones who might have handled the old hunts are gone. It’s me now, and I’m telling you I can stop this if you just give me a chance.”

“He did kill one of them,” Rin pointed out, her kukri flashing as she popped her hip out. “If we want to get the Settu gem back, we need to utilize Logan while he is here.”

“I do not disagree,” Ayanka said, holding up one wrinkled, thin-skinned hand. “Just forgive me if it is hard to hear about those things which we have for so long ignored.” She sighed and looked down. “I feel partly responsible. In the old days, when the men were many, we were less fearful. I’m afraid we’ve grown small, not just in numbers, but in heart. All except Rin here.”

Rin’s ears flattened against her head a little, and she smiled sheepishly. She didn’t seem like she was used to taking praise from the elder cat.

“What is it you propose?” the tight-lipped guard asked, her mouth bracketed in frown lines.

“I know your resources for spellwork are limited, but if we could portal to Earth, I could purchase some items to help with the journey, modern items. And weapons,” I explained.

“I have heard of the terror of Earth weapons. They could corrupt us,” Ayanka sighed.

“No,” I shook my head. “You’ve made it abundantly clear that you aren’t your men, but if it makes you feel better, I can take anything you dislike with me to another realm once we’re finished. If we’re successful, you’ll have enough magic to defend yourselves, anyway. I was skilled enough to beat the raptor without any significant weaponry, but lightning doesn’t strike twice. Are there bigger dinosaurs on the island?”

The look all the women shared told me the answer.

“Yeah,” I scoffed. “I can’t take down a T-Rex with a machete. I need more firepower if I’m going to make it to Aganju.
